• Choose the 2-Tank Charter if: You want world-class Niʻihau diving while keeping your afternoon open. Getting back to the harbor around 2:30 PM gives you plenty of time to relax, unwind, and prepare for an early dinner or evening plans.

• Choose the 3-Tank Charter if: You want to maximize your time underwater and dive 3 distinct sites around Lehua Crater. This full-day adventure gets back to the dock around 4:30 PM—ideal for dedicated divers looking for maximum bottom time!

The Journey: What to Expect

Prepare for a full, action-packed day on the water! The journey to Niʻihau crosses open ocean with swells that can feel like a roller coaster.

• Seasickness Prevention: If you are prone to seasickness, we strongly advise taking medication—Non-Drowsy Dramamine taken the night before AND the morning of the tour works best.

• Pelagic Sightings: The 1-hour crossing is our favorite time to scan the open water for rare toothed whales, including pilot whales and false killer whales!

• Return Transit: The ride home takes between 1 hour and 1 hour and 45 minutes depending on ocean conditions.

Vertical Awareness

We always try to dive Vertical Awareness first because it is one of the single best sites in Hawaii! This offshore pinnacle rises from 300 feet deep up to 45 feet at the top. It is frequented by sandbar sharks, grey reef sharks, bait balls, and Hawaiian monk seals. Rare life here includes the bandit angelfish, Hawaiian longfin anthias, tinker’s butterflyfish, and blackstripe coris.

Keyhole Drift to Lehua Gardens

An epic drift dive along dense walls of soft leather coral! Schools of 30+ grey reef sharks cruise the current alongside spotted eagle rays, with occasional passes by tiger sharks or whale sharks.

Niʻihau Arches

Mind-blowing lava topography! We drift through dramatic sea caves and lava tubes, ending at “TV Cave.” Home to Hawaiian conger eels, red-striped pipefish, orange cup coral, ghost shrimp, juvenile dragon wrasse, indigo dartfish, longnose hawkfish, bicolor anthias, and tiger cowrie.

Neon Cave

A massive sea cave with a breathtaking electric neon-blue glow shining from the mouth. A prime spot for manta rays, spotted eagle rays, Hawaiian monk seals, sandbar sharks, grey reef sharks, endemic psychedelic wrasse, and the rare black morph of the big longnose butterflyfish.

Pyramid Point

Named for the massive schools of pyramid butterflyfish. Currents surge over a prominent ledge where spotted eagle rays and sharks love to gather and hover effortlessly in the moving water.

Lehua Wall

A sheer vertical wall plunging straight into the deep blue, adorned with black coral trees, patrolling sharks, and frequent Hawaiian monk seal encounters.

(Note: On our 3-tank charter, we pick three distinct sites based on the day’s conditions, often combining Neon Cave, Pyramid Point, and Lehua Wall into grand-slam drift dives!)

Surface Interval Tour: Between dives, we serve lunch and take you on a mini-tour around Lehua Crater! We’ll show off the famous “Keyhole,” point out nesting seabirds (home to 16+ species), and look for dolphins and manta rays cruising the crater edges.

• FREE Gear Rental: Full setup included—BCD, regulator, wetsuit, tanks, weights, fins, mask, snorkel, and dive computer. (You are always welcome to bring your own gear!)

• Shaded Enclosed Cabin: Complete protection from sun and wind spray on the crossing.

• Onboard Bathroom (Head): Clean, private restroom available throughout the charter.

• Full Lunch & Snacks: Turkey or ham sandwiches provided on tours over 5 hours. Fresh fruit, cheese, hummus, guacamole, tortilla chips, cookies, and crackers are served between dives. (Please note any food allergies or dietary restrictions when booking!)

• Hydration: Complimentary cold water and juice.

• Extras: Defog, rainjackets for spray/rain, and a freshwater rinse tub set up back at the dock for your personal gear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer Nitrox?

Yes! Nitrox is highly recommended for 3-tank charters to maximize your bottom time and reduce fatigue. Nitrox is available for certified Nitrox divers, non-certified divers, or students completing their Nitrox/Enriched Air certification course with us. You can easily add Nitrox during online checkout.

How deep will we go?

The walls at Niʻihau drop down deep (some areas plunge to 350 feet). We spend most of our time between 35 and 75 feet, where you’ll find the densest marine life and best topography. With a buddy, you are welcome to dive deeper if you are certified and trained to do so.

Is this trip suitable for beginners, non-divers, or pregnant guests?

No. Due to open-ocean swells, vertical drop-offs, currents, and three full dives, divers should have open-water certification and recent diving experience (15+ logged dives recommended). Non-certified divers and pregnant guests cannot join due to ocean conditions.

Why do you dive Niʻihau year-round when others don’t?

By launching from Kikiaola on the west side, our run stays in protected leeward waters for most of the trip, avoiding the heavy windward swells that force other shops to stop running from the south side. Winter at Niʻihau is spectacular—offering the absolute best chances for humpback whale and manta ray encounters!

As an owner-operated team, we obsessively track ground swells (looking for under 6 feet) and light winds so we can pick the glassy windows between winter swells.

What happens if weather or swell prevents crossing?

Safety is always #1. If channel conditions are too rough, October through May trips may be re-routed to Mana Crack (same price) or to South Side local boat diving (with a $200 + tax per person refund!).
